CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS . . .
“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called ‘Opportunity’, and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” Edith Pierce…
We started the New Year off with a bang… Many Enneadians enjoyed the comradery shared at what could be one of the last opportunities to celebrate at the Al Chymia Shrine Temple. While not a sanctioned event a good time was shared by many of us.
December had so many activities available to our membership, including ‘Movie Pop Ups’, Dinner Group – hosted by Steve Grushkin, Book Club – hosted by Peggy Edwards, Holiday Potluck – hosted by Paola High, Game Night (Rummikub – hosted by Vickie Carwell, Poker – hosted by September Young, and Wine Party – hosted by LaMora Simpson. All of this was made possible by the generosity and hard work of our membership, so it’s important to note that, the end of the year and the beginning of the New Year is a great time to once again thank all of our members who put forth the sharing of their homes and the sharing of their energies that make all this possible.
Our Christmas Gala at Southwind Country Club was a very special event made possible by Carol McCourt and our Entertainment Committee. The food was great and the music by the Tornadoes kept us on our feet till it was time to go home. The decorations committee, as usual, did an outstanding job!
Carnival Season begins with our Coronation on Saturday, January 18! If you haven’t yet marked your calendars and made plans to attend, do it today! We will say good-bye and thank you to our current King and Queen (Carol Wasielewski and Steve Grushkin) and their Royal Court and crown Queen Sahara XXX and King Ennead XXX who, with their Royal Court, will represent the Grand Krewe of Ennead in 2020. Please remember that 2020 dues are payable now and that admission to the Coronation is free to paid members. (There are still rooms available at the Holiday Inn for our coronation, Just mention Ennead to get the special rate).
“Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope; winter alone reminds us of the human condition.”
– Mignon McLaughlin
Proposed changes to By-Laws
A large number of our members have been in Ennead for many years and have developed strong, personal relationships. Developing these relationships was a key component to joining Ennead; however, once the members’ marital status changed, the member no longer conformed with the membership eligibility requirements and they left (usually to join another Krewe). This is why we are proposing a change in the membership eligibility to include an Alumni of past Ennead members who were forced out under these bylaws. However, it should be noted that persons who are currently married and have never been an Ennead member and want to join Ennead, would not be eligible.
Because we want to remain, specifically, a “singles” Krewe, an Alumni member would be restricted from holding office or being a member of the Royal Court. Their dues would be the same as a General membership.
As an additional proposed change, any member who moves at least 150 miles away from Memphis can retain membership at a discounted rate. The Board of Directors approved that any member satisfying this distance would pay an annual fee of $250. This amount would cover the expenses associated with the four major events, “Coronation, Halloween, Christmas Gala, and Club Room”.
At the conclusion of the 30-day notice, the following proposed changes to the bylaws’ membership eligibility will be voted upon by the Board. If the vote passes, the amended version of the by-laws will be made available in the Members Only section of our Website and, in written form, as shown below.
ARTICLE III – Section 2: … Any member who marries during the current year, may remain a member with all rights and privileges of membership during that year. At the end of said current year, the membership will NOT automatically terminate, BUT shall transition to an Alumni membership.
ARTICLE III – Section 5:
GENERAL MEMBERS: Shall have and enjoy all rights and privileges of membership, including the right to vote, the right to membership on the Board of Directors, and the right to hold office. Any member who moves outside a 150 mile radius of Memphis may be retained as a member, but be subject to a reduced annual membership, as determined by the Board of Directors.
